Each year, all children from Reception to Year 6 take part in 10 swimming sessions at Ulverston Swimming Pool. The sessions are 45mins long and delivered by qualified swimming coaches, supported by school staff.
The sessions follow the Learn to Swim Stage 1-7 Awards which make up the core, national syllabus of learning to swim for primary school aged children. They develop the essential aquatic skills they need to be confident, competent and safe in the water.
Each of the Learn to Swim Stage 1-7 Awards has a list of clear outcomes, details of which can be found on the Swim England website.
Originally introduced as an extension to our PE/Sport swimming provision, these sessions for Year 5 & 6 children are now an integral part of our curriculum. The children learn how to enjoy lakes and rivers safely, as well as offering a taste of the sport of open water swimming. We've worked closely with Jacqui Young from Waterwise Cumbria to develop a programme of sessions to see the children progress their skills and confidence.
Jacqui's article in Horizons (Institute of Outdoor Learning periodical) explains more.
