Cartmel Community Education Centre

This is our nearest adult education centre, based at Cartmel Priory School. They offer a wide range of courses throughout the year, at a variety of different venues in the the local area. Brow Edge Foundation

The Brow Edge Foundation is a charity (526716) which helps students in the parish of Haverthwaite, including Backbarrow, who are attending courses at university, or college, in pursuit of a trade, or apprenticeships.  

This registered charity dates from 27th October 1927.  Some residents of the parish may recall the time when Brow Edge School existed, pre-building of Leven Valley School, and the Foundation came into being in that era. The remit of the Foundation also allows donations to specific projects at Leven Valley School at Backbarrow. Over the years the declared policy of the Foundation has had to be updated, as original drafts placed great emphasis on help to the poorer classes of the parish, for example.  The current declaration has now been amended to serve virtually all who qualify, but all applications must come from students who are resident in Haverthwaite Parish only, attending specific courses which come under the mandate of the Governors, although attendances at Sixth form colleges do not qualify. 

Publicity for grant applications is issued in the summer months via the Parish Magazine and Clerk to the Governors, who will issue forms to those interested parties, which must be returned by 21st October, and accompanied by proof of acceptance and attendance on the respective courses.   

Income for the Foundation is via the letting of land at High Brow Edge, including shooting rights, and Cartmel Old Grammar School Foundation which makes an annual transfer to Brow Edge.  

Five Governor/Trustees administer the funds. Two are appointed by the Haverthwaite Parish Council, one by Cumbria County Council, and two are co-opted. The Governors generally meet twice a year and make annual returns to the Charity Commissioners, as well as the issuing of grants to successful applicants. 

When local students are aware of their placings at university or college in autumn each year they may wish to apply for a grant from the Foundation by downloading and completing the appropriate form below and returning to:

Oxen Park Cinema Club

The Oxen Park Cinema Club (OPCC) brings the enjoyment of film to the rural communities of Colton and surrounding parishes. It began in early 2002 and is run by a committee of local residents who meet at once a month. OPCC is a member of the British Federation of Film Societies. During the autumn and spring terms OPCC comes to Leven Valley School to show a number films for children and families, these are usually shown after school.

Lakeside and Haverthwaite Railway

Our local steam railway that runs past school and features on our school badge! Lakeside and Haverthwaite Railway are always very supportive of school events and special activities from a WW2 Evacuation Day to sending us on our way on our outdoor education residential to generous raffle prizes. They do discounts for locals too! 

Lakeland Orienteering Club

The Lakeland Orienteering Club is our local orienteering club. Each year they organise a series of Schools Orienteering events at a variety of venues, these are well supported by lots of neighbouring schools and thoroughly enjoyed by the children. LOC members also provide maps and instruction for schools and after-school clubs. Check out their website to find out more about other events and training sessions.

Rusland Horizons

The Rusland Valley & Fells Heritage Partnership ('The Partnership') was set up in 2010 with a special interest in the working woodland landscapes of a significant part of South Lakeland. The main challenge for the Partnership has been to raise funding through the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF), specifically within the Landscape Partnership Scheme, to carry out the work we want to do.

The Partnership submitted a bid in May 2013 (Rusland Horizons: working a Lakeland Landscape): 

• Rusland because the Rusland Valley forms the central focus of the programme area;
• Horizons because we are looking outwards to other areas of South Lakeland, and we are looking backwards to learn from the past, and forward to help provide for the future.
